'THE GLADES', Second Season has arrived.

The Glades, Season 2

The Glades, Season 2

Entering its second season, THE GLADES is A&E’s attempt to capture the breezy, fun-filled style of USA’s signature crime series BURN NOTICE and for the most part it works.

THE GLADES is familiar detective series mumbo jumbo, but it is largely kept alive by an engaging performance by Matt Passmore as Jim Longworth. He’s a former Chicago cop, now working for the police in a small town in the Florida Everglades.

The Florida attitude is different, but Longworth has adjusted and as Season Two begins, he continues his unorthodox approach to solving crime (not to mention enjoying a nice snack and smoking a good cigar while investigating a case).

The season two premiere “Family Matters” focuses on a woman found dead in Little Havana who happens to be the daughter of a Cuban crime lord. In order to avoid a gang war, Longworth is granted a few days to solve the crime before things get out of control.

The end result is familiar to anyone who watches these kind of detective shows. Again, it’s the way the crime is solved that keeps you invested in going along for the ride and Passmore is great in the role. He brings a different style and attitude to what would normally be routine cop show cliches.

He’s surrounded by an able supporting cast, but it’s his struggling relationship with Callie Cargill (Kiele Sanchez) that keeps the show grounded. She’s a single mother whose husband is being released from prison. She’s planning on getting a divorce, but she needs to get her life in order first – especially for the sake of her son. They both have a thing for each other, but now there’s an added complication by episode’s end that will make their relationship even more difficult.

This on-going storyline keeps THE GLADES from getting too sure of itself when it comes to the police work – and it’s one of the major pieces that keeps the show from getting stale.

Still, for all the positives, THE GLADES is still what it is – a by-the-numbers cop show with a few redeeming qualities that sets it from the pack. USA does this kind of thing well, and A&E is now jumping into the game with the same quality control. However, if this isn’t your cup of tea, there are more complex and engaging series out there that are far better and more original than this (AMC’s THE KILLING anyone?) Share

If you haven’t yet tuned into this up and coming cop drama starring Matt Passmore (Jim Longworth) and Kiele Sanchez (Callie Cargill) now is the time to play catch up. The new season is set to premiere on Sunday June 5 at 10/9C on A&E.

Jim is an overly persistent homicide detective with some serious crime solving intuition. He was unexpectedly relocated to Florida after his captain in Chicago shot him and accused him of sleeping with his wife. Callie is a nurse, med school student, and totally devoted mother to 12 yr old Jeff with a husband in prison. When last we saw these two things were just starting to get interesting in their are they or aren’t they romance. After a night together long anticipated by fans of the show the happy bubble was burst with a phone call from Callie’s incarcerated husband, Ray, announcing his early release from prison. Where does this leave Jim and Callie? Well only time and this upcoming season will tell. Add into the mix Jim’s ever present wisecracking, love of golf, and his comedic relationship with partner and medical examiner Carlos Sanchez (Carlos Gomez) you’ve got a quickly emerging cable hit on your hands.

What do we have to look forward to in season two? In a “What’s New in Season 2” video posted on A&E’s official site Matt Passmore states that “the action is ramped up a bit…the stakes have definitely become higher, the danger is more immediate.” Jordan Wall, who plays 23 yr. old Daniel Green, sums it up nicely by saying “We’re throwing some jalapeños into ‘The Glades’ burrito.” In the official season two trailer executive producer Gary A. Randall promises “We’re making it a little edgier, we’re giving Jim slightly more complex criminals to go up against.” All in all sounds promising. Share

Fans of 'The Glades' rejoice. A&E picks up Crime Drama for a Second Season

Fans of ‘The Glades,’ rejoice. A&E has picked up the freshman crime drama for a 13-episode second season, according to a press release.

The order isn’t a surprise, considering the show is averaging 3.2 million viewers per new episode, which, according to A&E has made them basic cable’s No. 1 network on Sunday nights.

President and general manager of A&E Network Bob DeBitetto is quoted in the release as saying,”‘The Glades’ has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal audience in its first season. With superb writing and exceptional acting, led by a standout performance by Matt Passmore, we’re pleased that the series has struck a chord with fans.”

TVSquad’s own Allison Waldman noted confidence among the cast and crew that the show was going to be a hit when she visited the set earlier this summer. ‘The Glades’ is set in South Florida, where the show’s creator, Clifton Campbell (‘White Collar’), grew up. Waldman pointed out that while ‘The Glades’ shows that part of the country in a realistic, gritty light, the show is more ‘Magnum P.I.’ than ‘Homicide.’

Pre-production for season two begins later this year, along with pre-production for season one of A&E’s new drama, ‘Breakout Kings.’ Both are set to premiere in 2011.[amazon-product alink="0000FF" bordercolor="000000" height="240"]B001DKMY9Q[/amazon-product]
