A&E Television Renews ‘The Glades’ starring Kiele Sanchez

A&E has renewed its central flagship drama series The Glades for a third season, which will launch next summer 2012. The news comes a month after the cop series starring Matt Passmore and Kiele Sanchez ended its second season, which averaged 3.9 million viewers, 1.55 million of them in the 18-49 demographic and 1.74 million in adults 25-54. In 18-49, The Glades was up 12% from Season 1. With the renewal, A&E will have three original series on tap for next year: The Glades; Breakout Kings, which will return for a second season; and the recently picked up newcomer Longmire.

The news comes as the net looks to expand its scripted footprint, with other scripted dramas Breakout Kings and upcoming Longmire.

For its part, The Glades second season grew 12 percent in the advertiser beloved 18 to 49 demographic –and 2 percent in the adults 25 to 54 demo– compared to a year earlier. On average, the series, starring Matt Passmore and Kiele Sanchez lured 3.9 million total viewers.

The Glades is produced by Fox Television Studios, is executive produced by creator Clifton Campbell (White Collar, 21 Jump Street) and Gary Randall (Saving Grace.)

'The Glades', Matt Passmore Solves Dark Crimes in the Florida Sunshine for A&E Network

The Glades
It could be said that Florida is a strange place, with strange wildlife (gators, giant snakes, gerbils, panthers, manatees …), some strange people and definitely more than a few strange crimes. You could even say it to Florida native and TV writer/producer Clifton Campbell, creator of the A&E Network series “The Glades,” and he wouldn’t disagree.

“There’s a weird, off-speed criminality that happens in Florida,” Campbell says. “When we got A&E in on developing this into the series it has become, a lot of the conversation was, ‘It seems like every aberrant crime that happens, it happens in Florida, or someone has fled to Florida.” As to why this is, Campbell says, “I can’t put my finger on it. I grew up around it, so I’m used to it. It wasn’t until I got out in the world and talked to people about where I’m from, and they’d go, ‘That’s a weird place, isn’t it?’ I guess it is.”

In “The Glades,” Australian actor Matt Passmore stars as Jim Longworth, a newcomer to the Sunshine State. Previously a homicide detective in Chicago who was unjustly accused of a dalliance with his former captain’s wife, he decided to head to warmer climes, where he could pursue his love of golf. He now lives in the fictional town of Palm Glade, works for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement as a detective, and in between tee times, takes up the occasional crime in his own idiosyncratic way. And the murders just keep coming, whether it’s a body in a swamp, one found in an airplane at a nature preserve or a guy who turned up dead at a bikini contest. Each time, Longworth reluctantly leaves the golf course and pesters people until he gets to the truth. (more…)

The Glades star Matt Passmore says “He doesn’t mean to be annoying, but he just is…all the time,” who plays the role of homicide detective Jim Longworth. “Because he’s just right. He really likes being right. I think he looks at everyone else with pity, as wouldn’t you like to be as right as me? But, you’re not.”

“My goal was to write a murder mystery that has solid characters,” says The Glades executive producer Clifton Campbell. “I’m a native of Florida and know there are a lot of weird crimes here. I think it’s the perfect location for a guy like this.”

“I play Callie,” says The Glades star Kiele Sanchez. “At first my character can’t stand him, but there’s a little sexual tension there.” Callie is working as a nurse and caring for her 12-year-old son. She’s amused and annoyed by Longworth’s pursuit of her.

“They put this alligator on my table,” says The Glades star Carolos Gomez who plays the role of Carlos Sanchez. “I’m the medical examiner on the show and I kind of freak out. I’m not going to autopsy an alligator.”

The A&E dramatic series The Glades follows Jim Longworth, a brilliant  yet hard to get along with homicide detective from Chicago who transfers to Florida after being exiled from the department. He learns this place outside the Everglades isn’t quite so idyllic, as he finds people keep turning up murdered. Each case pulls Longworth off the golf course and reluctantly into his element as one of the sharpest homicide detectives to wear a badge.

The Glades is a character-driven police procedural set in the fictional town of Palm Glade, Florida. It stars Australian actor Matt Passmore (McLeod’s Daughters, Underbelly), Kiele Sanchez (The Perfect Getaway, Lost, Samantha Who?), Carlos Gómez (Shark, Sleeper Cell) and Michelle Hurd (Law & Order SVU, Gossip Girl). The Glades is produced by Fox Television Studios for A&E Network. The series executive producer is Clifton Campbell (White Collar, Profiler, 21 Jump Street) for Innuendo Productions and Gary Randall (Saving Grace) for Grand Productions, Inc. The series creator is Clifton Campbell.

Good-looking wisecracking detectives shows have been a success with Castle and Mentalist, and much earlier with Remington Steele and Moonlighting. If you like those shows, you’ll want to check out The Glades.

In “The Glades,” now showing on W Television Australia,  Matt Passmore stars as Jim Longworth, an attractive, brilliant, yet hard to get along with homicide detective from Chicago who after being wrongfully accused of sleeping with his former Captain’s wife is forced into exile. Longworth relocates to the sleepy, middle of nowhere town of Palm Glade, Florida, where the sunshine and golf are plentiful and crime is seemingly at a minimum. Yet life in this sleepy town is not as beautiful as it may seem.

Longworth was looking for a change of pace from his old life with the Chicago PD, and a change is definitely what he found. Only this town outside the Florida Everglades isn’t quite as idyllic as he thought, as he finds people keep turning up murdered. One week it’s a body in a swamp, the next it’s a corpse inside a plane at a nature preserve, then it’s a man found dead at a bikini contest. Each case pulls Longworth off the golf course and reluctantly into his element as one of the sharpest homicide detectives to wear a badge.

Between practicing his short game, trying to get a date with Callie played by Kiele Sanchez - a quick-witted, beautiful medical student with a 12 year-old son and a husband in prison – avoiding wearing his state trooper uniform, and trying to solve a slew of homicide cases, Longworth’s transition to his new surroundings is a bit more difficult than expected. If he wasn’t such a brilliant detective, maybe people would actually leave him alone and give him more time for leisure. In the meantime, he is realizing the skies in his new town are always sunny… with a chance of homicide.
